Lazise on Lake Garda

Lazise is a pleasant town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, the center is of particular interest for its city plan and monuments. Archaelogical digs have shown that the early settlements go back to the Bronze Age. The Romans callede it Lasitium, but it was not until the Middle Ages that lazise acquired privileges, first under Otto II and then in the 12th century, when it benefited from statutes of autonomy, and was the first free Comune with a vast territory.

Lazise, the city's history

The Church of San Nicolň, dating to the Romanesque perios (12th cent.), lies along the charming fishing port. Yo be noted on the north facede is a thirteenth century painting in Byzantine style (Madonna and child), possibly concealing an oledr painting.
Not far distant is Villa Castello, owned by the Bernini-Buri counts, with incorporated the remains of the old Scaliger fortifications, with its characteristic crenellated walls. The towers and the outbuildings, reinforced under the rule of the lords of verona, also included the Darsena, an important expample of military architecture.
One of the varius residences that enhance Lazise is Villa La Pergonala. This building, originally a monastery, was redesigned by the Venetian architect Girolamo Franco. Pacengo is a charming hamlet of Lazise, in a serene lake landskape. Caneva World, uno dei maggiori parchi acquatici d'italia, with numerous attractions and water game, is located here. It is worth while making a detour into the hilly interior as far as Bussolengo, to see the Parco Natura Viva, in the natural environments of the hills betweenl Lake Garda and Adige.
